Budget Friendly Christmas Ornaments

We had fun crafting 2 Christmas ornaments, each in 7 steps(while listening to Christmas music, of course!). Both are simple and budget-friendly ways to decorate for the holidays. Make mini-Christmas trees using grosgrain ribbon and pony beads. Or use double sided paper to create elegant heart ornaments. For even more ornament ideas check out our 7 DIY Holiday Ornaments post.

Ribbon Christmas Tree

You’ll need:
22″ of grosgrain ribbon (The kind with wire inside works best)
needle & 22″ of thread
pony beads & 2 “end cap” beads with small hole
scissors

1. Prepare by threading needle & doubling thread; secure with knot at end. About three inches down from the knot, make a loop knot. This will serve as the hook for your ornament.

2. Lay the ribbon flat horizontally. Take the left end and fold over about half an inch.

3. Thread the needle through a pony bead and “end cap” bead on top of the ribbon. Add as many knots as needed to secure the bead.

4. Continue pulling thread through underside of ribbon and add another bead.

5. Take the long side of the ribbon from the right and move under working craft to the left. Make fold slightly larger than the one above it. Thread through to secure, adding beads between each layer of ribbon.

6. Keep working ribbon from left to right, adding beads along the way.

7. Secure tail of ribbon in the middle (as shown) or as through it is another layer (if length of ribbon allows). Thread pony bead and “end cap” bead on underside of ribbon. Secure with as many knots as needed.

2. With the longer strip, glue opposite patterns back-to-back to create a double sided paper effect. Do the same with the two smaller strips.

3. Arrange the strips vertically in your hand with the short strips on the outside and long strips inside. The patterns should also alternate (flower, stripe, flower, stripe).

4. Align the bottom edges of the paper. Pinch with your left hand while. Using your right hand, pull down the top right outer strip into a half-heart shape. Repeat on left side.

6. Staple the gathered ends to secure the heart shape. Additional staples may be needed.

7. Loop a small piece of ribbon and knot. Tape inside the larger loop of the heart and hang.
